Over many decades Clinical Psychology has increasingly recognised that groups that are overly homogeneous can struggle to understand and respond to the needs of those different from themselves. While no group can ever be perfectly representative of all the identities in the communities it serves, being open and welcoming of different identities, and their lived experiences, may be crucial to ethical and effective practice. Mindful of the homogeneity in the profession of Clinical Psychology as a whole, including CPT’s steering group, we are exploring different ways to ensure we hear and respond to the voices of those different from ourselves, howsoever this is defined (e.g. gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexuality). This may relate to who constitutes our working groups and whose voices are heard in the articles we publish. We all hold a multiplicity of identities and there is much that we can learn from each other. Consequently, we actively encourage input and perspectives from those who feel that their community or voice is being inadequately represented in the papers published here or in the general functioning of the journal. We depend on each other to enlighten each other. In this way perhaps we can all help one another to ensure that our actions stand in solidarity with, rather than result in marginalising, seldom heard groups in our society.
